Masculine Pinot from one of Australia’s greatest. Dark fruited, savoury and meaty. Wonderful drinking for years to come.

A very masculine structure with more savoury components than the other two pinots from By Farr. With a balanced array of red and black fruits, it is fresh and edgy. Deep, meaty, spicy and mineral flavours continue to evolve thanks to the character of the vineyards. A firm yet delicate wine with a long textured finish.

Wine: By Farr ‘Farrside’ Pinot Noir 2017

Producer: By Farr

Region/Country: Geelong, Victoria, Australia

Grape/s: Pinot Noir

Production Method: Sustainable farming. Fermentation with indigenous yeast following cold soak. Gentle punch down and maturation in 50% new French oak.

Style: Dark fruited, masculine. More akin Vosne than Beaune.

Pairing Suggestion: Game, red meats, cured meats

Variety: Pinot Noir

Profile: Known as the Heartbreak grape owing to its tumultuous nature in the vineyard. Pinot Noir is best suited to cooler regions, including most famousl Burgundy in France where it produces the most sought after and expensive wines in the world. Thin skinned and early ripening, Pinot is a very transparent variety, capable of showing subtle differences in terroir and pronounced regional character. Flavours found in young Pinot include raspberries, strawberries, cherries and violets; with time these evolve into a bouquet often reminiscent of game, liquorice and autumnal undergrowth.

Classic Regions: Burgundy, Loire Valley, Alsace (France), Baden, Ahr (Germany), Yarra Valley, Tasmania, Mornington Peninsula (Australia), Walker Bay (South Africa), Russian River Valley, Oregon (USA)

From their base in Geelong, around 80 kilometres southwest of Melbourne, Gary Farr and his son Nick make small quantities of single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that rank with Australia's best. Gary has been making wine since the early 1980s in both Australia (at Bannockburn) and Burgundy (he worked 10 vintages at Domaine Dujac).
