Lovely perfume with crisp acidity balancing out richness and palate fruit weight with enviable drive.

In 1987, Paolo De Marchi grafted Chardonnay onto existing vines on the Isole e Olena estate. Since then they have produced some of Tuscany’s finest Chardonnay. An inviting golden colour with perfumes of toasted, buttery almonds. On the palate, there is great balance between rich, ripe fruit, creamy brioche and complex minerality. Full-bodied, the palate extends through to a long finish.

Producer: Isole e Olena

Region/Country: Tuscany, Italy

Grape/s: Chardonnay

Production Method:  After fermentation in barrel, the wine remained on the lees in one third new oak barrels for approximately 10 months. During the first six months the wine was stirred occasionally, in the Burgundian style, to give more texture and complexity to the wine.

Style: Mineral driven with crisp acidity and lovely stone and citrus fruit character.

Pairing Suggestion: White meats, seafood and vegetable dishes

Variety: Chardonnay

Profile: Commonly referred to as the winemakers grape owing to both its versatility and ease of manipulation in the winery. Chardonnay will range widely in character depending on its region of origin as well as winemaking style. One the lighter end of the spectrum, generally from cooler regions, it will display crisp, somewhat tart acidity alongside citrus and orchard fruit character and mineral texture. Moving to warmer climates gradually produces a more ripe stone and tropical fruit character. Winemaking, particularly the use of oak and batonnage (lees stirring) produces a richer, creamier texture and flavours of toast, butter and vanilla spice.

Classic Regions: Chablis, Cote d'Or, Maconnais, Champagne (France), Yarra Valley, Tasmania, Margaret River (Australia), Canterbury (New Zealand), Walker Bay (South Africa)

Isole e Olena

The name 'Isole e Olena' came about in the 1950s when two adjoining estates, 'Isole' and 'Olena', were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one. The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena goes as far back as the 12th century. Isole e Olena is situated in the western part of Chianti Classico, just north of the village of Castellina. Because the western flank of Chianti is open to breezes from the sea, this is a much cooler part of the zone, and results in wines that are lighter but more scented and elegant. They are one of the historic and iconic producers of Tuscany.
