Massolino are an outstanding producer located in Serralunga d’Alba, Piedmont. Dolcetto translates to ‘little sweet one’ and the fruit profile definitely suits this, with ripe dark berry character. The palate is dry however, with nice richness and earthy, savoury complexity alongside fresh acidity. A great BBQ red.

Profile: Mainly planted on the cooler north facing slopes in Piedmont, Dolcetto is a dark skinned variety which ripens easily, and produces soft and pleasant reds of increasingly high quality. Typical Dolcetto wine is intensely and brightly coloured and offers dark, gently spicy aromas with earthy undertones of almonds – or walnuts in more tannic examples.

This 23 hectare estate has been in the Massolino family since 1896. In recent years, the style of the wines has undergone a subtle transformation. The vineyards, with vines up to 60 years old, are in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba: the source of some of the greatest, most structured and longest-lived Barolos. Franco decided to use screwcap after blind tastings with different closures resulted in his Langhe Nebbiolo showing best when bottled under Stelvin Lux.
